I really like this cookbook. I’ve been following Allen Lim for sometime and was excited to see his book, which I had preordered. I’m glad I did.

I have a couple of athlete inspired cookbooks (some from VeloPress) and they all tend to have unusual ingredients. In our young family household, we just don’t have them and I never remember to add them to the grocery list. Yes, I could plan ahead, but who has time for that with kids?

This cookbook is very accessable in that many of their recipes are built from stuff we already have around the house. For example, they have a fantastic pancake which is leftover rice, eggs, milk, banana, and some other stuff that you mix in a blender. Everyone loves them. Simple to make and I have everything I need.

It has become my go-to athlete inspired cookbook.

I highly recommend this book for anyone, even non athletes. The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that they always require special ingredients that one has to buy for $20 just to make the dish. Biju and Allen have made masterful dishes out of ingredients normally found in the fridge and pantry. Plus, one can experience first-hand how some dishes so complex that one usually reserves for dining out can be made QUICKLY at home.

All the suggestions for food to go is great for riding or for anyone on the go to work, ect. Since getting this book, I routinely make a dish each night from it as I usually have all the supplies already and they taste "restaurant good".

If sport is your thing. The the intro alone is worth the purchase of this book, as Allen shares complex diet theory in layman’s terms for all to comprehend. One can totally rediscover the kitchen as a performance-enhancing yet delicious tool.

If you really are what you eat, then with this book you’ll be fast and healthy.

I pre-ordered this book randomly as I saw it on a twitter feed of one of the pro cyclists I follow. The book arrived the day of our first snowstorm, so it was perfect timing to try out some recipes.

The few recipes we tried from the Feed Zone have turned out great. Our first attempt was meatballs in red wine sauce, and it was excellent. The recipes in general can be made relatively quickly; I would say 90% can be made during the week. I really like the format of this book. Each item has big photo and more importantly nutritional information. The included bookmark is a nice touch too.

Overall, I would would recommend this book to anyone who wants to eat better.

"Multiplication Is for White People"

"Multiplication Is for White People": Raising Expectations for Other People’s Children Hardcover – March 20, 2012
Author: Lisa Delpit ID: 1595580468

Review

“If all teachers adopted these ideas, the American educational system would be vastly improved for all students. Covering age groups from preschool to college, Delpit offers advice to new and veteran teachers, advice that applies not only to African American students but to all ethnic and minority groups. A much-needed review of the American educational system and an examination of the techniques needed to improve the teaching methods of all involved in that system.”
Kirkus Reviews

“In this passionate book, Lisa Delpit argues thoughtfully and urgently for a new approach to the education of the children who are now left behind. We must heed her words of wisdom.”
—Diane Ravitch, author of The Death and Life of the Great American School System

“Once again Lisa Delpit dispels myths about the way in which African American children learn. She demonstrates how they can master complex concepts and succeed if racist systems get out of their way.”
—Herbert Kohl, 2010 Guggenheim Education Fellow, National Book Award winner, and author of 36 Children

“This book is an instant classic. By challenging us to reimagine the culture, politics, and practice of teaching our nation’s most vulnerable and marginalized students, Lisa Delpit raises the stakes of the current conversations on education yet again. Her scholarship is rigorous, her scope is wide-ranging, her writing is magical, and her hope is contagious.”
—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity

‘Multiplication Is for White People’ compels readers to think deeply about why we allow assessment to drive instruction, why we have silenced discussion about inequality in public policy, and why outcomes continue to be so stubbornly correlated with race. At a time when profound thinking about solving America’s education dilemmas is in short supply, Delpit has come to the rescue with a book that forces us to do just that.”
—Pedro Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University and author of The Trouble With Black Boys

I am all over the place on Lisa Delpit’s latest book on educating "poor black children," probably because Delpit is a little all over the place. She makes a plethora of excellent points, but in a fashion that is overly wordy (I know, pot calling the kettle black here; wait, I didn’t mean it that way!), puzzlingly organized, and admittedly angry ("I am left in my more cynical moments with the thought that poor black children have become the vehicle by which rich white people give money to their friends."). I found myself craving ease, warmth, and humor. Of course, I also found myself nodding along with frequency and learning a great deal about a subject of serious urgency. After giving my mixed feelings extensive thought, I decided that much of the problem is that Delpit’s book isn’t a well-reasoned opening salvo, it’s a passionate refutation. She responds to those who say African American students disproportionately fail in school because they just aren’t as smart as children of other races and come from "a culture of poverty" (and that those who succeed do so only because of unmeritocratic affirmative action). No wonder she’s pissed.

OF COURSE African American students are just as "gifted and brilliant" as everyone else (as Delpit ably demonstrates). But even educators who accept racial equality expect less of poor and minority students because of their supposed cultural deficiency. Delpit spends the bulk of the book tackling this point. Essentially, she says that "poor black children . . .

Before we start, yes, this is freaking long. I know. I originally wrote this for people at Reddit, and only made a few minor edits for .

First off, a squabble with how the book was published: I ended up paying 50 euros to purchase the book and get it shipped over here, at .com, which is a US-based website. This is odd because I live in the Netherlands, so it would’ve made much more sense to order at .co.uk or .de, but then I would’ve paid 50 euros for just the book sans the shipping. This is odd and in dire need of correction.

On , all you read are rave reviews of how the book will change your life and will instantly make you the healthiest human being on the planet and all that… well, I don’t believe in magic bullets, and neither should you. Don’t take this as me saying the book isn’t good; it is and there are definitely a lot of things I’ve learnt from it. However, I don’t think it’s the be-all-end-all of fitness books.

Overall, the book is well-written; very digestible writing. However, I can see that if you’re new to this, you’ll probably have a hard time on some parts, and will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. Because there is a lot of information: there are 32 individual movements described, ranging from a basic air squat to a muscle-up and there are over a 150 pages describing specific mobility techniques.

The book starts of with an introduction, which, as expected, is Kelly banging his own drum loudly for a couple pages; there is no real info there. From there on out, the book is divided up into roughly three parts:

* Introduction to/Explanation of the movement and mobility system: this explains Kelly’s general rules for movement, mainly concerning spinal organisation and bracing.
I must first let you know that I am not one to review books. I wrote my first book almost 2 years ago and I understand the incredible task it is to undertake something that Kelly has done. I have read hundreds of books in my life. Going through Pre-Med and then on through Chiropractic School I was expected to read every book having to do with anatomy, physiology, neurology, and you name it. I have spent over 20 years treating patients for back, neck, shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle problems. I have attended over a hundred seminars dedicated to teaching me to better understand the dynamics of the human body and how to help my patients heal faster and completely. I have also dedicated a large percentage of my practice to treating athletes and the injuries they suffer. Also being certified in Physiotherapy I have always tried to stay as competent as I can to help them heal from their injuries and most importantly to help prevent them.

I came across Kelly’s work over a year ago through his mobilityWOD.com site. I was so impressed with the dedication he showed by posting a daily video on helping others not only treat but prevent injuries. When I heard of his upcoming book I can say for the first time in a long time I was very excited for a new book to read. I pre-ordered it many months ago and continued to check for its release like a kid waiting for Christmas. I received my copy early this week and after spending about 4 days and unable to put it down, reading it at every opportunity, let me summarize my thoughts on what I can say without question is the absolute best volume of information I have ever seen compiled in one book that addresses the human body.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Cia Vale, the girl who survived the Testing, vows to join the rebel alliance fighting against the United Commonwealth. But who will follow her? And who can be trusted?

–This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Booklist

New university student Cia overhears a plot that will not only strengthen the controversial testing that permits students entry to the university but also will result in the government’s overthrow. When she shares details with United Commonwealth President Collindar, she is tasked with killing 12 important government officials to stop the plot. But is it the right thing to do? Although this first-person narrative is burdened with repetitious introspection, it also builds to a satisfyingly tense climax before a final clever authorial twist subverts the story. Readers should start with The Testing (2013) and Independent Study (2014) to get the necessary backstory for this series ender. Grades 7-10. –Cindy Welch

Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau is the third and final book in The Testing trilogy. It continues the story of Cia Vale, survivor of the brutal University entrance exam known as TheTesting, University student and rebel as she attempts to end The Testing. i have enjoyed both previous books and enjoyed reading the ending of the story.

What I liked

The protagonist. I really liked Cia as a YA protagonist. She has her head on her shoulders and gives great consideration to the consequences of her actions. She’s very much of the watch and wait mould. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t take action, but she doesn’t act without thinking. These character traits are what lead to her central position in the drama. The story would have played very differently with a Katniss Everdeen or a Tris Prior as the protagonist.

The themes. The theme of Testing is continued throughout the series. This is continued in Graduation Day when Cia must test the loyalty of those she wishes to have as allies, and she herself continues to be tested in more ways that one as she seeks to end the horrific University entrance exam. Trust is also a major theme in Graduation Day as Cia must decide whom to place her trust.

The pacing. The pacing kept moving along briskly and kept me turning the pages.

What I didn’t like

Mockingjay. Two leaders, one rebel, one elected, both telling two different stories. Teen heroine must work out which of them is telling the truth and the future of her society rests on her decision. Sound familiar? In my review of The Testing I commented that it had similar themes and plot points to The Hunger Games, and I’m seeing the same in the final book of the series.

Personal Impact

A Grace Disguised by Gerald Sittser has impacted me in a rare and profound way. Never have I read a book that tackles the heart of the issue of suffering and the heart of humanity harmoniously and with such eloquence as Sitter’s. Sittser engages his audience by peeling away the layers of his thought and into the depths of the pain that he suffered when his mother, wife, and youngest daughter were killed instantly after a head-on collision with a drunk driver. It is plain to see that he has spent countless hours in agony, reasoning out his thoughts, struggling with his faith, and just in living an ordinary life after the accident. The reader is a helpless and captive audience as he describes how he dealt with spiritual issues such as faith in God’s sovereignty and emotional issues such as the inability to forgive. Through it all, Sittser recognized that he can never get over the tragedy, but he can allow it to grow him through the choices he makes in response to it.

Personally, by the grace of God, I have never had to experience the mental, emotional, and spiritual anguish of such a tragedy. But after reading this book, I know that I am better prepared to deal with any such occurrence in my life for the future. Sittser’s writing made me admire the resiliency of the human spirit, and also appreciate the role of faith in overcoming devastating loss. Sittser was able to overcome his anguish largely because of his well-grounded faith in the promises of God, and his faith in the absolute standards of morality and justice of which God is the source. I can only hope to be able to handle catastrophic losses (which he points out are inevitable) with such grace and sound mind.
…when I received the phone call. I had stayed home from church with a sore heel when I picked up my phone to see my best friend was calling. It wasn’t her though, it was someone else–her mother, calling to tell me that their dear girl was taken from us in a horrible accident. I had to break the news to one of her best friends, my daughter. The grief had our whole county reeling.

After the dust settled, the funeral and memorials done, the semester over, I had time at the bookstore to comb through all the books on grief. Of course I looked over Lewis and the other major Christian writers, but they weren’t of much use to myself and my pain. Lewis–God bless him–lost a wife to cancer after she had a full life. Our girl was 11.

Sittser knows grief. He knows sudden, horrible, irrevocable death; trauma, tragedy and loss. Loss with a capital L. He lost his wife, his four-year-old daughter and his mother before his eyes during a drunk driving accident. As a well-respected Fuller seminarian, he was encouraged by his friends to write down his observation and addressed the concept and effects of catastrophic loss a full three years after the accident.

Now that I have said why this book was relative to me, let me tell you why it’s relative to you and everyone you know: he makes one thing firm–loss is loss, and cannot be qualified as more or less. He does not feel that his loss was greater than anyone else’s, for all loss is relative to the person who is doing the losing, whether that someone’s a parent, a unemployed mom, or a father trying to cope with his children after divorce. He clearly states that losing a job, for instance, is a loss. Rape is a loss. Divorce is a loss. Death constitutes a loss. Loss is loss is loss.

Log Horizon, Vol. 2: The Knights of Camelot Paperback – July 21, 2015
Author: Mamare Touno ID: 0316263818

About the Author

Kazuhiro Hara is the artist behind both the Log Horizon light novel series and its manga adaptation.

Mamare Touno is an author best known for his sci-fi light novel series, Log Horizon.

Series: Log Horizon (Book 2)Paperback: 240 pagesPublisher: Yen On (July 21, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0316263818ISBN-13: 978-0316263818 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.8 x 8.2 inches Shipping Weight: 8.5 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #27,087 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #491 in Books > Teens > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction #527 in Books > Teens > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure #1094 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure > Science Fiction
While volume 1 of the light novel series covered the effects of The Catastrophe on a more smaller level — Shiroe, his companions, and the Crescent Moon League — volume 2 described the effects of The Catastrophe on the Adventurers residing in Akiba, a major city for Adventurers. With the Intercity Transport Gates non-functional, the unpredictable destinations from using Fairy Rings, and monsters roaming the land, this "game" had become very real to the trapped Adventurers. Many of them had become too scared to venture out of Akiba and thus were in a virtual prison.

Meanwhile, unscrupulous high-level Adventurer guilds took advantage of the low-level "newbies" that were also trapped in this world by recruiting them under false pretenses and then using them as slave labor. In other news, many guilds were recruiting to increase their member size and then use their large guild membership to influence or bully smaller guilds. Akiba was slowly turning into a depressing nightmare.

And Shiroe the Enchanter, the Machiavelli-in-Glasses, wasn’t going to stand for this.

This volume details how Shiroe and his friends and allies bring civilized order and hope to not only the Adventurers but the People of the Earth that live in the world. There is more exposition of the events that happen in this volume than the anime could cover.

You learn things in this volume that the anime skips or barely touches upon.
* You learn a little bit more Henrietta’s real life background. (not mentioned in anime)
* You learn a little bit more about Marielle and CalID’s background. (one line in the anime)
* You learn a little bit more about Minori and Touya’s background.
