I really like this cookbook. I’ve been following Allen Lim for sometime and was excited to see his book, which I had preordered. I’m glad I did.

I have a couple of athlete inspired cookbooks (some from VeloPress) and they all tend to have unusual ingredients. In our young family household, we just don’t have them and I never remember to add them to the grocery list. Yes, I could plan ahead, but who has time for that with kids?

This cookbook is very accessable in that many of their recipes are built from stuff we already have around the house. For example, they have a fantastic pancake which is leftover rice, eggs, milk, banana, and some other stuff that you mix in a blender. Everyone loves them. Simple to make and I have everything I need.

It has become my go-to athlete inspired cookbook.

I highly recommend this book for anyone, even non athletes. The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that they always require special ingredients that one has to buy for $20 just to make the dish. Biju and Allen have made masterful dishes out of ingredients normally found in the fridge and pantry. Plus, one can experience first-hand how some dishes so complex that one usually reserves for dining out can be made QUICKLY at home.

All the suggestions for food to go is great for riding or for anyone on the go to work, ect. Since getting this book, I routinely make a dish each night from it as I usually have all the supplies already and they taste "restaurant good".

If sport is your thing. The the intro alone is worth the purchase of this book, as Allen shares complex diet theory in layman’s terms for all to comprehend. One can totally rediscover the kitchen as a performance-enhancing yet delicious tool.

If you really are what you eat, then with this book you’ll be fast and healthy.

I pre-ordered this book randomly as I saw it on a twitter feed of one of the pro cyclists I follow. The book arrived the day of our first snowstorm, so it was perfect timing to try out some recipes.

The few recipes we tried from the Feed Zone have turned out great. Our first attempt was meatballs in red wine sauce, and it was excellent. The recipes in general can be made relatively quickly; I would say 90% can be made during the week. I really like the format of this book. Each item has big photo and more importantly nutritional information. The included bookmark is a nice touch too.

Overall, I would would recommend this book to anyone who wants to eat better.

"Multiplication Is for White People"

"Multiplication Is for White People": Raising Expectations for Other People’s Children Hardcover – March 20, 2012
Author: Lisa Delpit ID: 1595580468

Review

“If all teachers adopted these ideas, the American educational system would be vastly improved for all students. Covering age groups from preschool to college, Delpit offers advice to new and veteran teachers, advice that applies not only to African American students but to all ethnic and minority groups. A much-needed review of the American educational system and an examination of the techniques needed to improve the teaching methods of all involved in that system.”
Kirkus Reviews

“In this passionate book, Lisa Delpit argues thoughtfully and urgently for a new approach to the education of the children who are now left behind. We must heed her words of wisdom.”
—Diane Ravitch, author of The Death and Life of the Great American School System

“Once again Lisa Delpit dispels myths about the way in which African American children learn. She demonstrates how they can master complex concepts and succeed if racist systems get out of their way.”
—Herbert Kohl, 2010 Guggenheim Education Fellow, National Book Award winner, and author of 36 Children

“This book is an instant classic. By challenging us to reimagine the culture, politics, and practice of teaching our nation’s most vulnerable and marginalized students, Lisa Delpit raises the stakes of the current conversations on education yet again. Her scholarship is rigorous, her scope is wide-ranging, her writing is magical, and her hope is contagious.”
—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity

‘Multiplication Is for White People’ compels readers to think deeply about why we allow assessment to drive instruction, why we have silenced discussion about inequality in public policy, and why outcomes continue to be so stubbornly correlated with race. At a time when profound thinking about solving America’s education dilemmas is in short supply, Delpit has come to the rescue with a book that forces us to do just that.”
—Pedro Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University and author of The Trouble With Black Boys

I am all over the place on Lisa Delpit’s latest book on educating "poor black children," probably because Delpit is a little all over the place. She makes a plethora of excellent points, but in a fashion that is overly wordy (I know, pot calling the kettle black here; wait, I didn’t mean it that way!), puzzlingly organized, and admittedly angry ("I am left in my more cynical moments with the thought that poor black children have become the vehicle by which rich white people give money to their friends."). I found myself craving ease, warmth, and humor. Of course, I also found myself nodding along with frequency and learning a great deal about a subject of serious urgency. After giving my mixed feelings extensive thought, I decided that much of the problem is that Delpit’s book isn’t a well-reasoned opening salvo, it’s a passionate refutation. She responds to those who say African American students disproportionately fail in school because they just aren’t as smart as children of other races and come from "a culture of poverty" (and that those who succeed do so only because of unmeritocratic affirmative action). No wonder she’s pissed.

OF COURSE African American students are just as "gifted and brilliant" as everyone else (as Delpit ably demonstrates). But even educators who accept racial equality expect less of poor and minority students because of their supposed cultural deficiency. Delpit spends the bulk of the book tackling this point. Essentially, she says that "poor black children . . .

Before we start, yes, this is freaking long. I know. I originally wrote this for people at Reddit, and only made a few minor edits for .

First off, a squabble with how the book was published: I ended up paying 50 euros to purchase the book and get it shipped over here, at .com, which is a US-based website. This is odd because I live in the Netherlands, so it would’ve made much more sense to order at .co.uk or .de, but then I would’ve paid 50 euros for just the book sans the shipping. This is odd and in dire need of correction.

On , all you read are rave reviews of how the book will change your life and will instantly make you the healthiest human being on the planet and all that… well, I don’t believe in magic bullets, and neither should you. Don’t take this as me saying the book isn’t good; it is and there are definitely a lot of things I’ve learnt from it. However, I don’t think it’s the be-all-end-all of fitness books.

Overall, the book is well-written; very digestible writing. However, I can see that if you’re new to this, you’ll probably have a hard time on some parts, and will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. Because there is a lot of information: there are 32 individual movements described, ranging from a basic air squat to a muscle-up and there are over a 150 pages describing specific mobility techniques.

The book starts of with an introduction, which, as expected, is Kelly banging his own drum loudly for a couple pages; there is no real info there. From there on out, the book is divided up into roughly three parts:

* Introduction to/Explanation of the movement and mobility system: this explains Kelly’s general rules for movement, mainly concerning spinal organisation and bracing.
I must first let you know that I am not one to review books. I wrote my first book almost 2 years ago and I understand the incredible task it is to undertake something that Kelly has done. I have read hundreds of books in my life. Going through Pre-Med and then on through Chiropractic School I was expected to read every book having to do with anatomy, physiology, neurology, and you name it. I have spent over 20 years treating patients for back, neck, shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle problems. I have attended over a hundred seminars dedicated to teaching me to better understand the dynamics of the human body and how to help my patients heal faster and completely. I have also dedicated a large percentage of my practice to treating athletes and the injuries they suffer. Also being certified in Physiotherapy I have always tried to stay as competent as I can to help them heal from their injuries and most importantly to help prevent them.

I came across Kelly’s work over a year ago through his mobilityWOD.com site. I was so impressed with the dedication he showed by posting a daily video on helping others not only treat but prevent injuries. When I heard of his upcoming book I can say for the first time in a long time I was very excited for a new book to read. I pre-ordered it many months ago and continued to check for its release like a kid waiting for Christmas. I received my copy early this week and after spending about 4 days and unable to put it down, reading it at every opportunity, let me summarize my thoughts on what I can say without question is the absolute best volume of information I have ever seen compiled in one book that addresses the human body.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Cia Vale, the girl who survived the Testing, vows to join the rebel alliance fighting against the United Commonwealth. But who will follow her? And who can be trusted?

–This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Booklist

New university student Cia overhears a plot that will not only strengthen the controversial testing that permits students entry to the university but also will result in the government’s overthrow. When she shares details with United Commonwealth President Collindar, she is tasked with killing 12 important government officials to stop the plot. But is it the right thing to do? Although this first-person narrative is burdened with repetitious introspection, it also builds to a satisfyingly tense climax before a final clever authorial twist subverts the story. Readers should start with The Testing (2013) and Independent Study (2014) to get the necessary backstory for this series ender. Grades 7-10. –Cindy Welch

Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau is the third and final book in The Testing trilogy. It continues the story of Cia Vale, survivor of the brutal University entrance exam known as TheTesting, University student and rebel as she attempts to end The Testing. i have enjoyed both previous books and enjoyed reading the ending of the story.

What I liked

The protagonist. I really liked Cia as a YA protagonist. She has her head on her shoulders and gives great consideration to the consequences of her actions. She’s very much of the watch and wait mould. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t take action, but she doesn’t act without thinking. These character traits are what lead to her central position in the drama. The story would have played very differently with a Katniss Everdeen or a Tris Prior as the protagonist.

The themes. The theme of Testing is continued throughout the series. This is continued in Graduation Day when Cia must test the loyalty of those she wishes to have as allies, and she herself continues to be tested in more ways that one as she seeks to end the horrific University entrance exam. Trust is also a major theme in Graduation Day as Cia must decide whom to place her trust.

The pacing. The pacing kept moving along briskly and kept me turning the pages.

What I didn’t like

Mockingjay. Two leaders, one rebel, one elected, both telling two different stories. Teen heroine must work out which of them is telling the truth and the future of her society rests on her decision. Sound familiar? In my review of The Testing I commented that it had similar themes and plot points to The Hunger Games, and I’m seeing the same in the final book of the series.

Personal Impact

A Grace Disguised by Gerald Sittser has impacted me in a rare and profound way. Never have I read a book that tackles the heart of the issue of suffering and the heart of humanity harmoniously and with such eloquence as Sitter’s. Sittser engages his audience by peeling away the layers of his thought and into the depths of the pain that he suffered when his mother, wife, and youngest daughter were killed instantly after a head-on collision with a drunk driver. It is plain to see that he has spent countless hours in agony, reasoning out his thoughts, struggling with his faith, and just in living an ordinary life after the accident. The reader is a helpless and captive audience as he describes how he dealt with spiritual issues such as faith in God’s sovereignty and emotional issues such as the inability to forgive. Through it all, Sittser recognized that he can never get over the tragedy, but he can allow it to grow him through the choices he makes in response to it.

Personally, by the grace of God, I have never had to experience the mental, emotional, and spiritual anguish of such a tragedy. But after reading this book, I know that I am better prepared to deal with any such occurrence in my life for the future. Sittser’s writing made me admire the resiliency of the human spirit, and also appreciate the role of faith in overcoming devastating loss. Sittser was able to overcome his anguish largely because of his well-grounded faith in the promises of God, and his faith in the absolute standards of morality and justice of which God is the source. I can only hope to be able to handle catastrophic losses (which he points out are inevitable) with such grace and sound mind.
…when I received the phone call. I had stayed home from church with a sore heel when I picked up my phone to see my best friend was calling. It wasn’t her though, it was someone else–her mother, calling to tell me that their dear girl was taken from us in a horrible accident. I had to break the news to one of her best friends, my daughter. The grief had our whole county reeling.

After the dust settled, the funeral and memorials done, the semester over, I had time at the bookstore to comb through all the books on grief. Of course I looked over Lewis and the other major Christian writers, but they weren’t of much use to myself and my pain. Lewis–God bless him–lost a wife to cancer after she had a full life. Our girl was 11.

Sittser knows grief. He knows sudden, horrible, irrevocable death; trauma, tragedy and loss. Loss with a capital L. He lost his wife, his four-year-old daughter and his mother before his eyes during a drunk driving accident. As a well-respected Fuller seminarian, he was encouraged by his friends to write down his observation and addressed the concept and effects of catastrophic loss a full three years after the accident.

Now that I have said why this book was relative to me, let me tell you why it’s relative to you and everyone you know: he makes one thing firm–loss is loss, and cannot be qualified as more or less. He does not feel that his loss was greater than anyone else’s, for all loss is relative to the person who is doing the losing, whether that someone’s a parent, a unemployed mom, or a father trying to cope with his children after divorce. He clearly states that losing a job, for instance, is a loss. Rape is a loss. Divorce is a loss. Death constitutes a loss. Loss is loss is loss.

Author: Mamare Touno ID: 0316263818

About the Author

Kazuhiro Hara is the artist behind both the Log Horizon light novel series and its manga adaptation.

Mamare Touno is an author best known for his sci-fi light novel series, Log Horizon.

Series: Log Horizon (Book 2)Paperback: 240 pagesPublisher: Yen On (July 21, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0316263818ISBN-13: 978-0316263818 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.8 x 8.2 inches Shipping Weight: 8.5 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #27,087 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #491 in Books > Teens > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction #527 in Books > Teens > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure #1094 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure > Science Fiction
While volume 1 of the light novel series covered the effects of The Catastrophe on a more smaller level — Shiroe, his companions, and the Crescent Moon League — volume 2 described the effects of The Catastrophe on the Adventurers residing in Akiba, a major city for Adventurers. With the Intercity Transport Gates non-functional, the unpredictable destinations from using Fairy Rings, and monsters roaming the land, this "game" had become very real to the trapped Adventurers. Many of them had become too scared to venture out of Akiba and thus were in a virtual prison.

Meanwhile, unscrupulous high-level Adventurer guilds took advantage of the low-level "newbies" that were also trapped in this world by recruiting them under false pretenses and then using them as slave labor. In other news, many guilds were recruiting to increase their member size and then use their large guild membership to influence or bully smaller guilds. Akiba was slowly turning into a depressing nightmare.

And Shiroe the Enchanter, the Machiavelli-in-Glasses, wasn’t going to stand for this.

This volume details how Shiroe and his friends and allies bring civilized order and hope to not only the Adventurers but the People of the Earth that live in the world. There is more exposition of the events that happen in this volume than the anime could cover.

You learn things in this volume that the anime skips or barely touches upon.
* You learn a little bit more Henrietta’s real life background. (not mentioned in anime)
* You learn a little bit more about Marielle and CalID’s background. (one line in the anime)
* You learn a little bit more about Minori and Touya’s background.

When I think of the agony I’ve had to go through, living with what now seems an utterly classic case of ADHD, and now grown up, it is so affirming to read that Dr. Barklay concludes not one method of treatment — behavioral modification, medication, external devices, inner talk, medication (you really need to repeat this one), organizational strategies, and so on, NOR all of these strategies put together is going to make living with someone — child, student, adolescent, etc. with ADHD easy.

But fortunately a right mixture of these strategies, through lots of trial and error and experimentation will make it a lot easier.

Now that’s one statement worth knowing and accepting–as you try the 50th technique or combination thereof.

The second statement that Dr Barklay makes and that needs to be thought deeply about is that 80% (Barklay estimates)of people with ADHD has a coeval condition, i.e., anxiety, low self-esteem, mood swings, depression, etc., for lots of possibly ‘hard-wired’ and/or environmental reasons. I know the ‘proper’ term is ‘Co-morbid.’ But would some administrator that works for the APA or a member of the DSM committee(s) kindly REMOVE that term for diagnoses that address cognitive, mood, or perceptual disorders’?
Suppose someone were to say, "The breadth of competencies among mental health professionals is co-morbid with the profound range in pathologies that those who enter the mental health professions seem to possess?"

Instead, just figure that the ‘Dennis the Menace’ and ‘Denise the Caprice’ may have other things going on along with ADHD, so just take a deep breath, and organize a Sherlock Holmes committee if you can.

The Art of Seduction PDF Free Download

The Art of Seduction: An Indispensible Primer on the Ultimate Form of Power Audible – Abridged dged
Author: Jeff David ID: B00006G36E

When raised to the level of art, seduction, an indirect and subtle form of power, has toppled empires, won elections, and enslaved great minds. The Art of Seduction synthesizes the legacies of civilization’s greatest seducers – from Cleopatra to JFK – with the philosophies of important intellectuals on the subject, including everyone from Freud to Kierkegaard and Ovid to Casanova, and the classic literature of seduction. Robert Greene identifies the rules of a timeless, amoral game and explores how to cast a spell, break down resistance, and, ultimately, compel a target to surrender. The Art of Seduction is an indispensable primer on the essence of one of history’s greatest weapons and the ultimate form of power.

Hmm. I feel like a lot of the negative reviews (my focus) are caught up in labeling this book somehow misogynistic and manipulative at its core. And I certainly agree to an extent: the language that Greene uses is definitely suggestive of manipulation and in many ways focuses on upsetting the power balances that naturally occur in relationships. But I think that those who focus on this point entirely are very cynical. In our modern age, we have lost touch with art. We have lost touch with patience. Even writing this review was a matter of pointing, clicking – and I am running more on a general feeling here than I am attempting to make careful points.

So, to answer to those who labeled this book dangerous, misogynistic, manipulative, superficial, etc., I’d like to make a few points. Greene is careful to explain that "the art of seduction" originates in the feminine mystique, and that men have adopted it because they recognize the great power that it holds. So, good job ladies. Sure, society still has a ways to go in order to truly honor any REAL notion of equality between genders, but if you see a man reading this book, it is because he is trying to master the art that originated in the depths, mysteriousness and natural power of femininity. (And besides, how difficult is it to seduce most men? Many of us are simple creatures.) The arguments about misogyny also seem to originate in our societal attitudes towards sex – but this book is not about how to get laid. Certainly, sexual interactions play a role in seduction, but this book is more about how to win people over.

Now, the manipulative part. The language in this book certainly suggests that manipulation is really they key to seduction.
If you are just looking for a good book to help you get laid with minimal effort, then put this book down. There are books that are much easier and will get you results much faster. This book is not about getting easy pussy at a bar or strip joint. It is about helping a person fall deeply in love with you, and this is better. A person in lust for you is wild and not concerned about you. A person in love with you will go to the ends of the earth for you.

If you have very little background in psychology and/or philosophy, put this book down because you’re not ready to understand it yet. It is an incredible book and I hope you don’t get turned off because you’re not prepared to read it.

If you are a die hard, conservative Christian moralist who is happy with their life and belief system, then PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE put this book down. Your beliefs will change to some extent, I promise, regardless of how strong you think they are. And if they don’t you’ll just be filled with dissonant emotions when you really understand what the Bible means when it says the world can be a terrible place.

On the other hand, if you are intelligent, observant, and patient then this is just simply an incredible read. You will see everything in this world with a new outlook. It will teach you the most intricate workings of human nature. Human nature is dark. Consider the following two biological facts:

1. A woman is likely to retain more sperm when she has an orgasm during sex.

2. A man’s sperm is designed to kill the sperm of other men.

What does this mean? Women have been biologically hardwired to seek one man (the Alpha male) to be the sperm donor and to seek out another to raise the kid (the Beta male). Sorry folks, nature is just that dark.
I am a self-confident, self-motivated, self-directed individual who pretty much knows exactly what to do and when to do things to get the preferred results. I am a smiling, friendly and mostly a charismatic person. At least that’s how I used to be before I met this girl in my Freshman composition class.

She was very attractive and I fell in love with her. She exercised the seduction techniques mentioned in this book (such as stirring interest indirectly, creating triangles, getting close to me and giving the impression of like-mindedness etc) to make that happen and it came to a point where I was fantasizing her with me in my life. She was all that I was thinking of. I was losing grip over my life. I somehow became dependent on her. She then started coquetting and withdrawing herself. I gradually started losing my self-esteem and I was no more that charismatic person with self-confidence and self-esteem. I was doing things that she thought would ultimately would lead to our mutual pleasure…but it only made both of us empty.

Finally, one day she drove me to a isolated forest…and I thought she was going to have us do something pleasurable (finally). She just asked me to step out of the car and handed some papers and got in her car and left me there stranded. I was devastated. I started reading the papers. It was titled "The Seduction of <my name>". It started with a character map of me…everything that she had observed about me, my weaknesses, what gave me my self-confidence etc. Then there were list of steps, almost like a manual, that described how she seduced me step-by-step.

Author Arthur Charles Clarke is renowned as one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. His "2001: A Space Odyssey", written with and filmed by Stanley Kubrick, is viewed as one of the seminal works in science fiction history. Obviously, Clarke didn’t make his career out of one single book (and movie). He has been quite a prodigious, and proficient, writer. In addition to writing three sequels to the "2001" saga, he also wrote the best-selling "Rama" series, numerous single novels like "Hammer of God" and "Songs of Distant Earth", and untold numbers of short stories. His stories have won just about every conceivable award for this genre and have achieved the dual goal of garnering critical praise and popular approval. Of all his novels, though, it may be one of his earliest that still stands as his best.

"Childhood’s End" was first published in 1953, a time when the cold war was in full form and people were beginning to truly look towards the stars for other life and possibilities for exploration. "Childhood’s End" tapped into that fertile imagination to craft a story of profound scale and meaning. It begins one day when numerous spaceships suddenly appear in the sky above Earth. They are flown by an alien species referred to as the Overlords. The purpose of their journey to third planet of the Solar System is subject to much speculation and fear. These aliens seem to be a benevolent race that only wants to help humanity solve the problems that plague it. In fifty years, these Overlords will end ignorance, poverty, war, and disease. To what end do they do this, though? The absence of any obstacles and struggles renders humanity complacent and inert.

The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind Reprint Edition

The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance, and Empower the Mind Reprint Edition
Author: Visit ‘s Michio Kaku Page ID: 0307473341

From Booklist

Facts to ponder: there are as many stars in our galaxy (about 100 billion) as there are neurons in your brain; your cell phone has more computing power than NASA had when it landed Apollo 11 on the moon. These seemingly unrelated facts tell us two things: our brains are magnificently complex organisms, and science fiction has a way of becoming reality rather quickly. This deeply fascinating book by theoretical physicist Kaku explores what might be in store for our minds: practical telepathy and telekinesis; artificial memories implanted into our brains; and a pill that will make us smarter. He describes work being done right now on using sensors to read images in the human brain and on downloading artificial memories into the brain to treat victims of strokes and Alzheimer’s. SF fans might experience a sort of breathless thrill when reading the book—This stuff is happening! It’s really happening!—and for general readers who have never really thought of the brain in all its glorious complexity and potential, the book could be a seriously mind-opening experience. –David Pitt

Review

Praise for The Future of the Mind, #1 New York Times Bestseller

“Compelling…Kaku thinks with great breadth, and the vistas he presents us are worth the trip”

The New York Times Book Review

“Intriguing….extraordinary findings…A fascinating sprint through everything from telepathy research to the 147,456 processors of the Blue Gene computer, which has been used to simulate 4.5% of the brain’s synapses and neurons”
—Nature

“Fizzes with his characteristic effervescence….Fascinating….. For all his talk of surrogates and intelligent robots, no manufactured being could have a fraction of his charisma.”
The Independent

“A mind-bending study of the possibilities of the brain….a clear and readable guide to what is going on at a time of astonishingly rapid change.”
The Telegraph

In this expansive, illuminating journey through the mind, theoretical physicist Kaku (Physics of the Future) explores fantastical realms of science fiction that may soon become our reality. His futurist framework merges physics with neuroscience… applied to demonstrations that “show proof-of-principle” in accomplishing what was previously fictional: that minds can be read, memories can be digitally stored, and intelligences can be improved to great extents. The discussion, while heavily scientific, is engaging, clear, and replete with cinematic referencesThese new mental frontiers make for captivating reading”
-Publishers Weekly

“Kaku turns his attention to the human mind with equally satisfying results
…Telepathy is no longer a fantasy since scanners can already detect, if crudely, what a subject is thinking, and genetics and biochemistry now allow researchers to alter memories and increase intelligence in animals. Direct electrical stimulation of distinct brain regions has changed behavior, awakened comatose patients, relieved depression, and produced out-of-body and religious experiences… Kaku is not shy about quoting science-fiction movies and TV (he has seen them all)… he delivers ingenious predictions extrapolated from good research already in progress.”

Praise for Physics of the Future

“[A] wide-ranging tour of what to expect from technological progress over the next century or so…. fascinating—and related with commendable clarity”–Wall Street Journal

“Mind-bending……..Kaku has a gift for explaining incredibly complex concepts, on subjects as far-ranging as nanotechnology and space travel, in language the lay reader can grasp….engrossing”–San Francisco Chronicle

“Epic in its scope and heroic in its inspiration”–Scientific American

“[Kaku] has the rare ability to take complicated scientific theories and turn them into readable tales about what our lives will be like in the future…..fun…fascinating. And just a little bit spooky”–USA Today

Praise for Physics of the Impossible

“An invigorating experience”
-The Christian Science Monitor

“Kaku’s latest book aims to explain exactly why some visions of the future may eventually be realized while others are likely to remain beyond the bounds of possibility. . . . Science fiction often explores such questions; science falls silent at this point. Kaku’s work helps to fill a void.”—The Economist

“Mighty few theoretical physicists would bother expounding some of these possible impossibilities, and Kaku is to be congratulated for doing so. . . . [He gets] the juices of future physicists flowing.”—Los Angeles Times

Short Review: Interested in getting current with state of the art neuroscience and some philosophical discussions about our brain and consciousness? If so, read this approachable and easy-to-understand book!

Longer Review:

Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist with a knack for explaining difficult concepts with simple analogies and clear descriptions. I’ve been a fan for some years now, and I thoroughly enjoyed Physics of the Impossible, Parallel Worlds, and Hyperspace. I was a bit surprised when I heard that Kaku was extending a bit outside his theoretical physics wheelhouse to write a book about the brain – but I’m very glad I decided to give this one a read.

After reading this book I feel like I’m much more up to date with where we currently stand when it comes to state-of-the-art neuroscience. Kaku stresses greatly the avalanche of modern neuroscience progress that was triggered by widespread use of MRI technology starting in the 90s, and this new information is forcing us to confront and redevelop longstanding ideas regarding our brains. A discussion of the various technological developments unlocking this new information leads into some philosophical discussion of consciousness and what makes us ‘human’.

The bulk of the remainder of The Future of the Mind is focused on how the increase in brain-technology will affect the world, including discussions of telepathy, telekinesis, memory implants, memory recording, potential mental illness cures, brain enhancement, and mind reading. He also discusses different ‘types’ of consciousness including things like the consciousness of robots and the potential consciousness of alien life forms.
One idle evening I was reading an old magazine and read about mind games. I don’t know why, but I felt a great drive to explore for the nature of mind, its functioning and the processing. Although I came across dozens of books and magazines, yet being a student of science, I was looking for some scientific explanation of our brain and its domains. Then I day I came across, what I wanted. The book titled “The future of the mind “, proved to be the perfect answer to all my questions and once I started with the introduction of the book, I could not resist to go further. The book is a perfect combination of fiction and science explaining the various mental coding models and possible potentials if human brain. If someone wants to dig out the future dimensions of the human mind and its miracles, this book is the best.

Once I got fully involved in learning about the human brain, I kept on reading more material over the topic. During this phase another perfect piece of writing came up my way, the book titled “Maximizing Brain Control : Unleash The Genius In You”. In this marvelous piece of writing the author has motivated all the readers about the controlling ability of our mind. He suggests that our brains are just like programmed machines, so better is the programming, better will be the results. He has suggested a number of simple tactics to conquer our mind strengths and use them for more useful purposes. He has helped the reader to understand the different divisions of the brain, by explaining it in very simple terms.

I brought this book a few years ago and it’s basically a overview of knifemaking. If you are looking for a book that offers step by step on how to go about making a knife..this isn’t the one. After my knowledge of knifemaking has increased, I went back over this book and downgraded it to 2 stars

What it does offer is the differences between forging and stock removal, the materials needed for each, some information regarding damascus and Kriss blades, finishing techniques, a section on building homemade grinders, heat treating information, how to build a one brick forge (doesn’t work that well but does work for small blades), some tips on grinding the bevels, etc.

My complaints about this book is that Wayne presents some false information. He suggests that narrow tangs are stronger then full tangs. This is simply false as a full tang blade is supported by a full width of steel going all the way across the handle and when properly constructed..the actual handle isn’t weak either as it should be held on with mechanical AND chemical methods. Hammering knives through a 2×4 is a inaccurate test as well and he specifically said he would never do that to a full tang knife. Well that means he’s never actually compared the two on that test then. He also suggests that hand-rubbed finishes are highly quality then mirror finish, which just makes no logical sense as a mirror finish requires *far* more effort. Even I can do a decent hand rubbed finish on my blades.

EDIT: My review has been revised and I reduced this book down in rating due to the inaccuracies mentioned above in addition to the grinding section being focused on belt sanders despite it being targeted to those on a limited budget.
